Contours of Life (Poetry)
Contours of Life captures the significant happenings of our time and the vicissitudes of life in a tune that is simple, accessible and in visual images with stress on shapes that are relevant and artistically pleasing. It praises virtue, denounces vice and mirrors the triumphs and travails of the downtrodden, thus engendering in the reader an ever-deepening understanding of life, death and destiny.
Inspired by the impact of life and persons around the author, these poems do not only evolve around her or her life alone. They are poems plucked from the lips of her land in its manifold laughters and sorrows, poems which have been designed to have a universal appeal.
At the time of the publication of this book, Binta Salma Mohammed was a lecturer in the Department of English and European Languages, Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria. She was born in Gwarzo, Kano State. She held B.A. and M.A. degrees in English Languages from Bayero University and had completed a PhD in the same field at the University of Abuja, Abuja, before her death in March, 1999. She was married to the writer and journalist Ibrahim Sheme, with whom she had three children – a girl and two boys.
Binta’s poems, short stories and articles have appeared in school and news publications, as well as in journals and anthologies. Contours of Life was her first book published. However, her novel, A Clean Break, was also published. She has another collection of poems and a collection of short stories which are being prepared for posthumous publication.
